European Conference: Girona 2009
Serving as the official opening act of the European Week for Waste Reduction, the European Conference on Waste Reduction was held at the Palau de Congressos in Girona (Spain) on the 24th and 25th November 2009.
Structured in two parts, the conference aimed to provide a framework for reflection on strategies for the prevention of municipal waste:
- The 1st part of the conference concentrated on strategies, policies and benchmarks for waste prevention at European level, in accordance with Directive on Waste 2008/98/EC and concluded with a focus on awareness-raising actions and communication strategies, in the framework of the European Week for Waste Reduction project.
- The 2nd part explored innovative best practices on waste prevention in different contexts. This involved analysing the environmental impact of products at the various stages of the product life cycle as well as the actions that can be taken up by different actors (administrations/local authorities, associations/NGOs, businesses/industries, educational establishments, others..) to contribute to waste prevention efforts at these various stages.
